The purpose of the Rights of the Child display and week is to promote children’s right to:
Rights of the Child
1. Equal treatment irrespective of race, religion or nationality 2. Opportunities and facilities for optimal mental, physical, socio-emotional and spiritual development3. A home, adequate nutrition, recreation and medical care4. Special care and education when children have a mental, physical or social disability 5. Love and understanding6. Free education and recreation 7. Help and protection first in accidents or other emergencies 8. Protection against all forms of neglect, cruelty and exploitation 9. Grow up in an atmosphere of love, unity, tolerance and friendship 10. A name a nationality from birth. Every year the Rights of the Child committee which consists of persons from the Dutch and French side organizes a week of events to education child, parents and the public about children’s rights. The annual program of activities in commemoration and celebration of the Rights of the Child will be taking place November 18th – December 2nd 2011 with the theme: “CHILDREN’S RIGHTS not an OPTION but an OBLIGATION” The schedule of activities is as follows:Friday, November 18th 2011: 10:00am Opening of Activities; Philipsburg Cultural Center Saturday, November 19th 2011: 9:00am – 12:00pmVoice of our Children - Panel discussion on Youth against Crime Philipsburg Cultural Center Thursday, November 24th 2011: 7:00pm – 9:00pm St. Maarten Youth Council & Youth Parliament - Panel Discussion/Forum on Rules and Codes in Schools; Rupert Maynard Community Center in St. Peters Saturday, November 26th 2011: 9:00am – 3:00pmSports day with children from St. Maarten, St. Martin, Anguilla, Saba and St. Eustatius participating in various sporting disciplines. Sunday, November 27th 2011: UJIMA Foundation - Educational Festival at Emilio Wilson Estate Monday, November 21st – December 2nd 2011Philipsburg Jubilee Library Exhibit The Rights of the Child Committee would like to thank the Philipsburg Jubilee Library for allowing us to put up this display on an annual basis.
